Best Flooring for Dogs and Cats

Oct 5, 2026·The answer is in the warranties. They say, floor by floor, what a pet is expected to do to it.

Vinyl plank is the best all-round floor for a home with dogs or cats: its makers write pet stains, urine included, into the warranty, and it is quieter under claws than a hard floor. No floor is scratch-proof, and hardwood warranties exclude pet scratches outright. If you want wood, choose a hard species. For an older dog, grip matters more than scratch resistance.

Scratches: no floor is scratch-proof

Shaw says it in its own warranty: no flooring surface is scratch-proof. COREtec's warranty states that gloss reduction or surface scratches are not considered surface wear, and Bruce's hardwood warranty excludes marks, scuffs, scratches, gouges and dents, including those caused by pets. The National Wood Flooring Association's advice is to trim your pet's nails regularly, while understanding that scratches can happen. Pergo's warranty gives the same instruction.

If you want wood, pick it by hardness

The Janka test measures the force needed to press a steel ball halfway into the wood. A higher number means a wood that dents less under claws. These are the Wood Database values.

Accidents: urine and water

This is where vinyl leads. COREtec's warranty says the floor will resist staining caused by pet stains from a domestic cat or dog, including urine, feces and vomit, and asks that cleaning begin immediately upon discovery. Its waterproof cover applies as long as the water does not flow over the edge of the surface. Laminate depends on the range: Pergo's general stain warranty excludes pet stains, while its pet-protection clause covers urine, and the water cover does not apply without a perimeter seal. Hardwood warranties exclude water damage.

Grip, for older and larger dogs

A hard, smooth floor is easy to clean and hard to walk on. The American Kennel Club notes that senior dogs can have a hard time walking on or getting up from hardwood floors, and suggests non-slip area rugs or inexpensive yoga mats where the dog regularly walks. A veterinary paper in Frontiers in Veterinary Science describes poor traction on slick surfaces such as tile, cement and hardwood as a common problem, particularly in older or arthritic dogs.

Noise, hair and allergies

BerryAlloc points out that the constant ticking of claws on a hard floor can become an annoyance; vinyl is the quieter choice. For allergies, the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America advises removing carpet where possible and installing hard-surface flooring, or using throw rugs washed weekly in hot water. It notes that pet dander can remain in a home for up to six months after the pet has gone.

Cleaning products

The ASPCA says most cleaning agents can be used safely in homes as long as label recommendations are followed. Let a cleaned carpet dry before pets go back into the area, and remember that cats are especially sensitive to essential oils.

See the floor in your room before you choose

With a pet, the color of the floor matters as much as the material: it decides how much hair and how many marks you see. Styly's floor visualizer shows your own room with a different floor from one photo, so you can compare tones in your light before you buy.

Flooring and pets: FAQ

Does hardwood scratch from dogs?

Yes. The NWFA advises trimming nails regularly while understanding that scratches can happen, and Bruce's warranty excludes scratches caused by pets.

What is the best flooring for dogs that pee?

Vinyl plank with a named pet-stain clause. COREtec's warranty covers urine stains and asks you to clean up as soon as you find them.

Is vinyl or laminate better for dogs?

Both have pet-stain lines. Laminate's water cover depends on a sealed perimeter; vinyl's holds while the water stays on the surface.

What is the best flooring for large or older dogs?

One with grip, plus non-slip rugs on the routes the dog uses, as the American Kennel Club suggests.

Which hardwood is best with dogs?

A hard species: hickory at 1,880 lbf, hard maple at 1,450 or white oak at 1,350 on the Janka scale. Pine, at 380, dents easily.

Is carpet bad with pets and allergies?

The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America advises removing carpet where possible, or using throw rugs washed weekly in hot water.

Is any floor scratch-proof?

No. Shaw's own warranty says no flooring surface is scratch-proof.

How this guide was put together

Every statement above comes from the warranty, trade body or health organization named with it, read in October 2026. We did not test floors ourselves. Warranties differ between product lines, so the warranty for the floor you buy takes priority over anything here.
