From an AI Room Image to a Real Decorating Plan

Living room design inspiration / Inspiration pour un salon

You have an image of your living room that finally feels right. The colours work, the sofa looks comfortable and the room seems calmer. The next decision is practical: which parts can you reproduce in your actual space? An AI image is a useful starting point. A decorating plan connects that idea to measurements, furniture you can buy and decisions you can carry out.

Choose what you like before generating more

Save one preferred image and write down three specific things you want to keep from it. Perhaps it is the warm wall colour, the smaller coffee table and the lighting beside the sofa. Also note what the image got wrong: a missing radiator, an invented window or a sofa you cannot replace. This gives a designer a clear direction without asking them to copy every pixel.

Anchor the proposal to the real room

Make a simple sketch with the length of each wall, doors and their opening direction, windows, fixed storage and radiators. Add the dimensions of furniture that will stay. Photograph the room from opposite corners so hidden constraints are visible. When checking a proposed layout, walk the routes you use every day and check whether doors, drawers and chairs can open. A plausible image alone cannot confirm that these movements work.

Separate the look from the exact product

A generated sofa may have no real product reference. Use it to describe the shape, colour and material you want, then choose an actual sofa with a documented width, depth and seat height. Mark each item in your project as an existing piece, a selected product or an inspiration reference. This makes it clear which objects still need sourcing and prevents an illustrative image from becoming an accidental shopping promise.

Build the shopping list around your country

For each selected item, record the retailer, exact model, dimensions, colour, quantity, product link and price checked that day. Check delivery to your postcode, not simply whether the retailer has a website in your language. Keep delivery and assembly costs separate. If an item is unavailable, look for an alternative that satisfies the same dimensions and function before matching its appearance.

Use the designer to resolve the remaining decisions

A useful review should explain why the layout works, which purchases matter first and what has been kept from your existing room. Send a short, grouped revision request: keep the layout, reduce the sofa budget, retain the current curtains. Agree on the scope of that revision in advance. If the proposal requires structural, electrical or plumbing changes, those works need their own technical assessment.

Before ordering, check these five things

  • The furniture dimensions match the measured layout.
  • The main walking routes and openings remain usable.
  • Existing furniture is identified and included.
  • Product references, delivery location and total costs are checked.
  • Any difference between the visual and the selected products is explained.

For example, you might keep a grey sofa and oak floor while replacing a bulky table, adding two lamps and changing the wall colour. The final document should identify those precise changes and the products needed to make them. That is a manageable room project, even if the first AI concept showed a complete makeover.
